Support through the night

Night Supervision Services in Minnesota

When an assessed need requires support during the night, a clear overnight plan matters. Truwell reviews night supervision referrals around the person’s actual assistance needs, routines, and preferred home environment.

Understand the service before choosing support

Minnesota night supervision provides overnight assistance in the person’s own home. DHS allows awake or asleep staffing according to assessed support needs. Discuss the required staffing model with the case manager and confirm whether Truwell can meet it.

Overnight assistance

Identify what help is needed when the person wakes, including relevant daily living tasks and routines in the authorized plan.

Support-plan follow-through

Discuss how staff will carry out approved positive support strategies or reinforce skills consistently with daytime supports.

Awake staffing needs

If the person needs awake overnight staff, make that explicit in the referral. Confirm the required hours and provider capacity before relying on coverage.

Plan the shift—not just the hours

At handoff, discuss any changes, the person’s preferences, and the help expected overnight. Agree on how staff should respond without unnecessarily disturbing sleep or privacy.

Ask who receives the morning update and how an unexpected change will be documented. A useful handoff distinguishes a routine preference from something the case manager or another professional needs to review.

Night supervision is different from respite, which focuses on temporary caregiver relief, and 24EA, which does not provide an overnight staff shift in the home. The team must review any service combination for duplication. The service is not a substitute for emergency medical help.

Referral checklist

Have these details ready for a service-fit conversation:

  • Assessed overnight needs and current support plan
  • What assistance is needed, when, and how often
  • Whether awake staffing is required
  • Requested shift times and current daytime supports
  • Home location, access arrangements, and communication preferences
  • Case manager contact, authorization, and backup arrangements

Ask intake how to share sensitive records securely. An initial inquiry does not require sending a full medical record by ordinary email.

From inquiry to a confirmed plan

  1. STEP 1

    Describe the nights

Share actual support needs and patterns with the case manager rather than relying on a general request for safety monitoring.

  2. STEP 2

    Review the staffing plan

Confirm authorization, shift expectations, location, and whether the required staff are available.

  3. STEP 3

    Prepare the handoff

Agree on access, privacy, escalation contacts, morning updates, and the response to a missed shift.

Frequently asked questions

Does night supervision always require awake staff?

No. DHS permits awake or asleep staffing based on assessed needs. If awake staff are needed, the plan and referral should make that clear, and the provider must confirm it can meet those needs.

Is night supervision the same as overnight respite?

No. Night supervision addresses the person’s assessed overnight assistance needs. Respite provides temporary relief to an unpaid caregiver. Ask the case manager which service matches the reason support is needed.

Can 24EA replace an overnight staff shift?

No. 24-hour emergency assistance does not fund an awake or sleeping staff shift in the person’s home. Discuss scheduled overnight needs separately with the case manager.

How do we request night supervision from Truwell?

Submit the assessed overnight needs, requested hours, location, staffing requirements, and case manager details. Truwell reviews fit and capacity; a referral alone does not confirm coverage or a start date.
